St. James Catholic Church |
St. James Parish meets the needs of grieving families through pastoral care at home and hospital, liturgy, funeral lunches, greeting visitors and support. This page will acquaint you with the ways you can help provide food and support during the times of illness and death.
GREETER AT FUNERALS Volunteers greet people as they arrive at St. James for funerals and wakes. They welcome our visitors and guide them in our church and Parish Center. Bob May, one of our Pastoral Ministers, coordinates this ministry. His office is in the rectory at 402-572-0499.
HOLY HASH During times of extended illness, parish families may need meals which parishioners prepare and are then delivered to those families. Bob May is also the contact person for Holy Hash.
FUNERAL LUNCHEONS Many families have morning funerals and burials. When they return to the church from the cemetery, they can have a buffet-style meal served in the Parish Center. Parishioners provide the salads, breads and desserts for the luncheons, and the family is asked to donate $1 per plate to cover the cost of the meat and cheese. If you would like to be added to the list of generous, caring parishioners who provide food for funerals, you can use the sign-up form on this page. If you have questions, please call Laura Clark at 402-571-3007.
FUNERAL CREWS A team of parishioners arrives the morning of the funeral luncheon to prepare the food and beverages, supervise the buffet line, and clean up after the luncheon. Their warm and friendly service is greatly appreciated by the families. For information on the funeral crews, please contact Dee Bruggeman at 402-571-3277.
MEALS ON WHEELS St. James parishioners work with the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging to deliver Meals on Wheels in our northwest area of Omaha. For information on the Meals on Wheels program, please call 402-444-6444. If you are interested in delivering the meals, you can call parishioner Maxine Hill at 571-2528.
OTHER SERVICES Hospital Ministers, pastoral care and Stephen Ministry are some of the other services we provide. Please refer to other pages for information on these ministries, or contact the rectory for more information, 402-572-0499.
HOW DO I VOLUNTEER? If you would like to volunteer to help, please print this page. Return the completed page to the parish office, or you can put the form in the offering basket.
