Lector Ministry

Have you ever thought that you could be a lector?  Maybe the Lord is giving you a nudge in that direction.  Individuals or couples who feel a calling to read the Word of God are needed at St. James.  All lectors must attend a three-hour training session and be mandated by the Archdiocese of Omaha.  These classes are provided during the late summer and early fall.  Mandation (Commissioning) is celebrated with Mass at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral in the Fall.  Lectors are commissioned for a three-year period.  The St. James Liturgy Committee will conduct an evening of instruction and reflection for lectors occasionally after the mandation. 

Criteria for ministry as a lector include

· High School junior or older

· Aware of responsibilities that come with being a minister in the church

· Able to understand basic theology of this ministry

· Able to understand how God works in your life on a daily basis

· Able to share religious  values, feelings, be comfortable speaking of your faith life  

· Aware of ability to minister to others, recognize and appreciate God’s gifts to you

· Possess a spirit of generosity and willingness to serve

· Relate well with peers on many levels

· Be a person of high moral standards and personal values

· Able to read clearly and comfortably in front of a group

· Be a registered St. James Parishioner

St. James lectors are assigned according to their Mass preference.   Copies of the schedules are available in the Sacristy.  Assignments also are printed each week in the “Good News”.  If you would like to be considered for the Ministry of Lector and have questions, please call the rectory at 402-572-0499.
