Christmas Weekday

Reading and Reflection

Reading I: I John 2:29-3:6
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 98:1, 3cd-4,5-6
Gospel: John 1:29-34

Behold, the lamb of God.   During Holy Week we often sing the powerful song by the St. Louis Jesuits which has this as the refrain.  It is a strong, somber acknowledgement of the power of God manifested in Jesus.  It is a song of worship.   Two years ago the choir began singing it and our parishioners at St. James began singing along without prompting.   It was a moment of genuine worship that I treasure.   The church of St. James was singing its creed with great emotion and faith, knowing that our king must die and rise, knowing that our king is not an earthly king, and knowing that our king is king of eternity.   With grief and solidarity, we sang.   Today as we still glow from Christmas, the church reminds us again that the sacrifice of Jesus is not far away.   God is with us for a purpose and it will cost Jesus his life.   All life includes sacrifice and sorrow.   Our God has modeled the sacrifice and the redemption.   Let us behold the lamb of God, from infancy to glory.
