Thursday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

Memorial of Saint Anthony, abbot

Reading and Reflection

Reading I:    I Samuel 4:1-11
Responsorial Psalm:    Psalm 44:10-11, 14-15, 24-25
Gospel:    Mark 1:40-45

Jesus was a celebrity.   People flocked to him.   He had to escape to deserted places because so many people wanted to see him.   Yet this never went to his head.   The celebrities in American society are often very sad people whose fame has led to personal disasters.   Few celebrities seem to be able to handle the pressure and perspective.   They have to hire security people and live in gated mansions.   It's a sad life.

Others seem to be able to keep their faith and their morals.   They dedicate themselves to good causes and stand up for human rights and the dignity of the human person.   We all hope that if we had a moment in the spotlight we could do something good with the moment.

Each of us has the opportunity to move freely and bring Christ to the world.   He doesn't have to hide in any deserted places, because you and I can take him to each person we meet.   Let us pray today that in whatever position we find ourselves, that we put Christ first and make a difference.
